A little home along the way. This looked
so cozy I needed to include it with
our trip views.
On of the guide books defined some of the congested areas
as "cheek to jowl". I think this fits the description.
One of the more beautiful passages in what John calls "the ditch".
It is a canal linking the waterways and is really a
beautiful area of green trees clear to the water.
Of course the water along the "ditch" is blessed with an abundant
supply of rocks. You can see them very clearly due to the clear water.
It is a great encouragement to keep in the center.
Another lift lock ...Kirkfield. We chose to stay at the lock,
(after we went through), for the night. It was a great evening
in a quiet area and visiting with new friends on two boats who
also were staying that night.
Here's a different switch. The boats are loaded onto this carriage
using slings and taken on railroad tracks over the hill to the
water below. No lock lines necessary...it's a dry run once you get in.
Here they are loading the boats into the carriage. As you see
the carriage frame goes down into the water and the boats
float aboard and are put into the slings.
This is how it works. Up in the air and over the hill. This was our chance
to observe the day before we went the same route. It's really quite
an ingenious idea.
Here we are in the carriage at the apex point approaching the area
where we will start downward to the next water level. It was actually
fun..even for someone with a fear of heights..
